About Us
Our Sew Le Sew Meredaja Idir association preserves the ancient tradition of community solidarity while adapting to the needs of Ethiopian-Americans in the modern world.
Our Origins
Idir is deeply rooted in Ethiopian culture, dating back centuries as a community-based insurance system. The word "Idir" itself means "to spend the night together" in Amharic, reflecting how community members would stay with bereaved families during their time of grief.
Our U.S.-based Idir was established in 2025 by a small group of Ethiopian immigrants who recognized the need for cultural and financial support as they built new lives far from home. What began with 15 families has grown to a thriving organization serving hundreds of Ethiopian-Americans across multiple states.

Mutual Aid
We practice the Ethiopian principle of "dirsha" - the equal sharing of both burdens and joys among community members.
Dignity
We ensure that every life event, especially funerals, is conducted with the respect and cultural sensitivity our traditions demand.
Adaptation
While honoring tradition, we adapt our practices to address the realities of Ethiopian diaspora life in America.
